KAREN MARTIN (Composer)

A native of Los Angeles, Karen studied classical piano in London with Marina Horak (a protégé of the legendary Nadia Boulanger) and was trained in orchestration by the Hungarian composer Peter Sander. While in Europe, Karen performed her compositions in England, Austria and Italy. Upon her return to the United States, she obtained an MFA in Music Composition from CalArts, where her mentor was the modern classical composer and Pulitzer Prize winner, Mel Powell. Karen was selected as a Fellow at the Composers Lab run by The Sundance Institute. At the Los Angeles Theatre Center (LATC) she staged and directed multimedia production incorporating music, dance, spoken word and video about the universal struggle of women. She has scored the music to a number of independent films as well as television projects for network and cable. Two of her film scores were nominated as finalist at the Moondance Film Festival.
